Understanding Estrogen

Estrogen is often described as a reproductive hormone, but receptors for it sit in the brain, bones, blood vessels, skin, bladder and gut. That is why a change in estrogen is rarely felt in one place.

The basics

What is estrogen?

Estrogen is not one molecule but a family of related hormones. The most active form during the reproductive years is estradiol (E2). Estrone (E1) becomes the dominant form after menopause, and estriol (E3) rises during pregnancy.

Before menopause, most estradiol is produced by the ovaries in a rhythm that rises and falls across the menstrual cycle. Fat tissue, the adrenal glands and other tissues also convert precursor hormones into estrogen — which is why levels never simply switch off.

Because estrogen receptors are distributed throughout the body, changing levels can affect temperature regulation, memory and mood, sleep quality, bone turnover, vaginal and bladder tissue, skin collagen and cardiovascular function at the same time.

Where it comes from

Primarily the ovaries before menopause, with ongoing contributions from the adrenal glands and fat tissue, which convert androgens into estrogen throughout life.

What does it do?

Brain and mood

Estrogen interacts with serotonin and dopamine signaling and supports the brain's use of glucose — one reason falling levels are commonly linked with mood changes, word-finding difficulty and mental fog.

Temperature control

The hypothalamus behaves like a thermostat. Estrogen helps calibrate it, so falling or fluctuating levels can narrow the comfortable temperature range and trigger flushing and sweating.

Bone maintenance

Estrogen restrains the cells that break down bone. When levels decline, bone turnover accelerates, and loss of bone density can occur most rapidly in the years surrounding menopause.

Blood vessels and heart

Estrogen influences vascular tone and cholesterol handling. Cardiovascular risk patterns in women change measurably after menopause, which is why timing matters in any therapy conversation.

Sleep quality

Night-time temperature surges and shifting estrogen levels are frequently associated with fragmented sleep — often the first symptom women notice, and the one that magnifies everything else.

Skin, tissue and comfort

Estrogen supports collagen, skin hydration and the health of vaginal and urinary tissue. Declining levels are associated with dryness, thinning and increased urinary irritation.
