Glutathione is a tripeptide by structure, but it does not behave like a signalling peptide. Its job is neutralizing oxidative stress and supporting the liver's detoxification pathways.

What is Glutathione?

Glutathione is made of three amino acids — cysteine, glycine and glutamate — and is produced inside your own cells. It is present in the highest concentration in the liver, where detoxification work is heaviest.

It is sometimes called the master antioxidant because it does more than neutralize free radicals directly: it also regenerates other antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, so that they can keep working.

In the liver's phase II detoxification pathways, glutathione conjugation is how many compounds — including hormone metabolites and medications — are made water-soluble for elimination.

What makes it different

Structurally a peptide, functionally an antioxidant. It is one of the few molecules the body both produces internally and depletes measurably under sustained stress.

How Glutathione is thought to work

  1. Direct antioxidant action

    Glutathione donates electrons to neutralize reactive oxygen species before they damage cell membranes and DNA.

  2. Regenerating other antioxidants

    It restores oxidized vitamin C and vitamin E to their active forms, multiplying their effect.

  3. Phase II conjugation

    In the liver, glutathione binds to compounds so they can be excreted — central to processing hormone metabolites and drugs.

  4. Why levels fall

    Chronic stress, poor sleep, alcohol, medications, infection and age all increase demand or reduce production.

  5. Delivery matters

    Oral glutathione is largely broken down during digestion, which is why injectable, IV and liposomal routes exist.
